How to Surf Anonymously Through a VPN Service?

When you browse the internet using Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser, your computer will store some of the data as part of your browser history. If you want to browse the web anonymously, the first step is to get a VPN. Even then, there are some other steps you can take. Here’s how to surf anonymously through a VPN service.

Get a VPN

The first step is, obviously, to get a VPN. These virtual private networks allow you to connect to the internet more securely and prevents other people on the same network from accessing your information. It’s why they are recommended when using public Wi-Fi. As mentioned before though, this is only one step.

Use Incognito Mode

Chrome calls it “Incognito Mode”, Firefox calls it “Private Browsing”, it all boils down to the same thing; you can use your browser without it collecting any history, cookies, or other data. It also prevents the collection of personal information such as your address or credit card number. It doesn’t prevent things like government tracking or your ISP following you though, which is why you still want to use a VPN. On the other hand, a VPN doesn’t automatically stop your browser keeping information, which is why you should combine it with Incognito Mode for more secure browsing.

Use Guest Mode

Guest Mode is what you should use if you are borrowing someone else’s computer or using a public computer, such as one at a library. This gives you the option of browsing websites without having any browser history or cookies stored. It’s like browsing on a blank slate. You won’t have access to anything stored in your Google Account on Chrome, but neither will anyone else. Open Guest Mode by clicking on the small person at the top right of the screen, the one you click on to sign into your account. From there choose “Guest” to open up a guest browsing window. Close it when you’re done.

Things to Consider About Private Browsing

Keep in mind even combining a VPN with incognito mode doesn’t guarantee 100% privacy. If you download something to your computer, such as a document or image, this can still be seen by someone later.

Also, any bookmarks that you make while browsing in incognito mode are still available on your regular browser. Don’t bookmark websites that you don’t want people to know you’ve visited.

Your location could still be visible to the websites you use. VPNs can help with this because they allow you to manually change the location of the server and look like you are logged in from somewhere else. Without a VPN, the Google Location Services built into Chrome can access nearby Wi-Fi routers, the strength of your connection, your IP address, and more; all of which can be used to identify you and your location.

Complete Privacy is a Myth

Understand that your data will never be completely secure. There’s always something more you can do to protect your data, but someone that might have your password – or someone that has infiltrated your computer already – could still gain access to your information.
